Digital media in teaching - The advantages of virtual reality over other digital learning media

Digital media are becoming increasingly important in teaching. In this article, we look at the advantages that VR has over other learning media.

In a world characterized by rapid technological development, the education system is also influenced by digitization. Digital media have long since found their way into teaching and offer exciting opportunities to impart knowledge to students in an innovative way. Virtual reality technology is particularly outstanding among digital tools for teaching. In this blog post, we take a closer look at the benefits of virtual reality (VR for short) in school lessons and how it is sustainably changing education.

The magic of “immersion”

Imagine yourself in the middle of a deep gorge. Birds fly around excitedly. Take a short flight out of the gorge. After a 180° turn, an impressive volcano stretches out in front of you. The volcano erupts out of nowhere - rocks fly around in wild arches, glowing lava flows out of the crater like a flood. A spectacle that speeds up your pulse, overwhelms your senses and makes you take your breath away. Welcome to virtual reality — a world in which places are created that would not be accessible under normal circumstances. An experience that can neither be created in conventional teaching nor through comparable digital media in this form. But this is exactly where the fascinating world of virtual reality comes in and creates new methods for teaching.

There is no doubt that the same theoretical information about the volcanic eruption can also be conveyed on a tablet or in the form of a video, but in the case of these digital media, the learner remains a passive viewer. In the virtual world, on the other hand, the learner not only dives into theory — but also becomes an active part of the world of volcanoes. The thunder of rocks that barely fly past the learner, the bright lava and much more — this immersive experience creates a much deeper connection between students and the learning content. An experience that can be stored in memory for much longer thanks to the combination of emotional and visual impressions.

Practical learning instead of theoretical consumption

It is precisely this immersion that opens up further opportunities for school teaching, particularly for practice-based learning. Situations that are often too dangerous in reality or even impossible to implement can easily be virtually recreated and simulated. This creates a unique opportunity and provides exciting methods to experience situations that would normally not be possible in class, even though other digital media and tools were used. Scientific experiments, for example, could be carried out without scarcity of available resources and without potentially affecting one's own health — and that in a world that appears real to the learner. This simulation opens up new opportunities for understanding and learning, as learners can dive directly into the subject matter. The realistic presentation of such scenarios in virtual reality enables learners to develop a deeper understanding of complex concepts. Thanks to virtual reality, students can apply theoretical information in practice and expand and deepen their knowledge through active and self-directed learning.

Learn better with virtual reality

At a time when technology is omnipresent, digital media are opening up new horizons in teaching. They not only offer an innovative method for imparting knowledge, but also represent a bridge between the analog and digital world. But what the use of virtual reality precedes the use of comparable digital media in teaching is the aspect of immersion. Immersing yourself in virtual but seemingly real learning worlds and the feeling of being an integral part of this world create a unique learning experience. A learning experience that, thanks to various studies, has been proven to provide the basis for long-term learning success. A learning experience that motivates learners to engage more intensively with the learning content and to want to discover new things.
